CFAC Tax Cut Request Denied
by Laura WilsonKPAX, May 10, 2011 |
COLUMBIA FALLS- Members of the Flathead County Commission, along with School District 6 officials, have voted to turn down a request by the Columbia Falls Aluminum Company to reduce the amount of taxes the company owes.
The parties met Monday night in Columbia Falls for a public forum with CFAC asking the two boards to grant a motion to reduce the taxes by 95%. The request needed approval from both boards to go forward, but, both School District 6 and the commissioners denied the motion.
CFAC still has recurring costs even though it's been shut down. Owners were hoping a reduction in taxes, that would allow the plant to open again and employ nearly 300 people. But, taxpayers would have suffered from the added cost.
Montana US Senators Max Baucus and Jon Tester recently urged CFAC and the Bonneville Power Administration to find a purchasing agreement so that the plant could reopnen.
