by Mark Yuasa
Seattle Times, July 27, 2010

The Columbia River summer steelhead catches are nearing record proportions for this month.

So far in July there have been nearly 12,000 summer steelhead kept/released of which 6,200 were kept by anglers.

The record number of steelhead kept for the month of July (since at least the early 1970s) was the 8,221 fish caught just last year.

"With six days to go, will we break the record," Joe Hymer, a state Fish and Wildlife said via e-mail.

As for summer chinook from June 16-July 25, there were an estimated 66,345 salmon angler trips from Bonneville Dam downstream that produced 2,653 adult summer chinook kept and 1,323 released.

In addition, there were also an estimated 8,046 steelhead kept and 6,365 released plus 243 sockeye kept and 994 released.
