Ports Shut Down for the Weekend;
by Associated Press
|
Shipping ports all along the West Coast shut down for the weekend on Thursday due to an ongoing labor dispute between dockworker unions and the Pacific Maritime Association.
In total, 29 ports, including Portland, put a halt to cargo unloading over this weekend starting Thursday and lasting until Monday - Presidents Day.
The Associated Press reports companies did not want to pay workers holiday and weekend pay.
A producer at KPTV captured some images of ships that were bound for Portland, anchored up near Astoria while they wait for the shutdown to pass.
The only exceptions to the shutdown are military vessels and ships bound for Hawaii.
Ports are expected to reopen Tuesday.
