NHA Applauds Funding
by Staff |
The US-based National Hydropower Association has applauded legislation recently signed by President Obama that increases funding for the Department of Energy's Waterpower Program, calling the funding 'critical' to the expansion of hydro power resources in the country.
The new legislation provides US$50M for the program - a 25% increase over the current funding level. In a statement, NHA Executive Director Linda Church Ciocci said the funding could help the US hydro power industry to create jobs, develop new technologies and serve the public by expanding the country's base of domestic, renewable resources.
"Just last month, NHA released a study showing that we can add some 60,000MW of additional hydro power capacity by 2025 -- but, we need the federal R&D leadership that DOE's Waterpower program provides to make it happen," said Church Ciocci, pointing out that the study - Job Creation Opportunities in Hydropower - shows that building this hydro power capacity will have an enormous economic impact in every region, creating as many as 700,000 new jobs in the hydro power industry.
"The National Hydropower Association thanks both Congress and the President on their efforts to expand our clean-energy resources," added Church Ciocci. "We stand ready to work with them - and all other stakeholders - to continue the strong public-private efforts that will bring hydropower's benefits to all Americans."
