Ports Prepare for Columbia-Snake Lock Shutdown

by George Prentice
Boise Weekly, February 21, 2013

Port managers, producers and processors along the Columbia and Snake River systems are bracing for the shutdown of boat navigation between Lewiston and Portland, Ore., Saturday, March 2 -- when annual inspections, repairs and maintenance will commence.

This morning's Lewiston Tribune reports that four dam locks downstream from the Tri-Cities region of southeast Washington will resume service Saturday, March 16, and upstream locks will resume one week later.

The Tribune reports that replacement of unwatering pumps, upstream lock gate seals, wire rope replacement, mooring bit repair and an in-depth inspection at Washington's Lower Granite Dam are some of the projects planned during the shutdown.

Lower Granite Lake, formed behind the dam, extends 39 miles east to Lewiston.
