Walla Walla Union-Bulletin, February 21, 2013

WALLA WALLA -- Navigation locks on the Snake and Columbia river dams will be closed starting March 2 for routine annual inspections, repairs and maintenance.

All of the navigation locks on the dams, which are operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, will close at 6 a.m. on that day.

The lock at McNary Dam on the Columbia River will reopen just after midnight March 17. The locks on the four lower Snake River dams will reopen just after midnight March 23.

According to a release, the additional week for the four Snake River locks is needed to perform not only routine inspections and maintenance, but also non-routine work.

The locks on the remaining three dams on the Columbia River will reopen on March 16.

The Columbia River dams are by operated by the Corps' Portland District office. The lower Snake River dams are operated by the Corps' Walla Walla District office.

The two districts maintain the commercial navigation route from the Pacific Ocean 465 miles inland to Lewiston, Idaho.
