Lewiston Levee Parkway Irrigation
Schedule Returns to Nighttime Hours

LEWISTON, Idaho -- Lewiston Levee Parkway's irrigation system returned to nighttime watering hours, now that U.S. Army Corps of Engineers maintenance staff from the Lower Granite Natural Resources Management Office in Clarkston, Wash., replaced a failing 42-year-old irrigation pump. The current irrigation schedule is 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sundays through Thursdays.

A temporary diesel-powered pump was used during daylight hours over the past several weeks to irrigate recreation areas while the new pump and motor was acquired and installed.

"Some visitors seemed to enjoy the hot-weather relief of running through the sprinklers during that temporary watering schedule," said Joe Maxwell, Lower Granite natural resources manager. "Although, it will be more cost-efficient to irrigate at night with this new pump."

The new electric pump and motor system was purchased from Mather & Sons Pump Services for $8,890.35. Corps maintenance staff completed installation and testing of the new components on Monday, July 28. Maxwell said, "With proper maintenance, we hope to get more than 40 years out of this new pump."

The Lewiston Levee Parkway is open year-round. Facilities include day-use areas with 13 miles of the Snake and Clearwater Rivers National Recreation Trail. There are numerous parking areas from which to access the park and trail -- along Snake River Avenue between Snake River Miles 140-146, along the Lewiston Levee Bypass between Clearwater River Miles 0-2 on the south river bank and parallel to Highway 12 between Clearwater River Miles 2-7 on the north riverbank.

For more information about outdoor recreation opportunities along the lower Snake and Clearwater rivers, contact the Lower Granite Natural Resources Management Office at 509-751-0240 or email ClarkstonNaturalResources@usace.army.mil.
