U.S. Seeks Contractors for Emergency
Gate Work at 980-MW McNary

WALLA WALLA, Wash., U.S. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers seeks information about firms capable of performing emergency intake gate work related to fish screen installations at 980-MW McNary Dam on the Columbia River in Oregon. Responses are due Dec. 27.

The Corps' Walla Walla District previously called for bids by Dec. 21 for submersible power cable for extended submerged barrier screens at McNary.

The Corps now has issued a sources sought notice seeking information, primarily from small businesses, seeking firms capable of performing the latest work, which is valued at between $750,000 and $1.25 million.

The agency said fish screens were installed at hydroelectric projects to divert migrating salmon into bypass facilities. To increase fish guidance efficiency of the screens, intake gates have been raised from their normal stored operating position and dogged near deck levels. That has required the gates to be disengaged from hydraulic operating systems and has required hydraulic cylinders to be removed, preventing rapid closure of turbine intake emergency headgates.

The Corps said it plans to seek firms to saw cut and remove portions of steel-reinforced concrete ledger beams in three intake bays of a single turbine unit. The contractor is to overcut ledger beams, install epoxy anchors, install concrete formwork, and pour concrete to final dimensions. About 2.75 feet is to be removed from the vertical face of the ledger beams, which are 8 feet high, 20 feet wide, and 7.5 feet thick.

In addition, the contractor is to remove and refurbish three vertical barrier fish screens that sit on the ledger beams. The entire job is expected to be performed between September and December 2012.

A sources sought notice may be obtained from the Federal Business Opportunities Internet site, www.fbo.gov, by entering Solicitation No. W912EF12RSS03 in the "Keyword/Solicitation #" box.

Responses are due by e-mail to the address below by Dec. 27. For information, contact Elaine M. Vandiver, Contract Specialist, Corps of Engineers, Walla Walla District, 201 N. Third Ave., Walla Walla, WA 99362-1876; (1) 509-527-7221; E-mail: elaine.m.vandiver@usace.army.mil.
