Crossing Times to Change
for Three Dams on Snake River

by Staff
Walla Walla Union-Bulletin, September 30, 2008

Travelers looking to use Lower Granite, Little Goose or Lower Monumental as bridges can expect changes this week.

Crossing times for three U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dams on the Snake River will change Wednesday.

The new schedules for Lower Granite Dam near Pomeroy, Little Goose Dam near Starbuck and Lower Monumental Dam near Kahlotus will be available by calling a toll-free hotline, said Scott Ross, chief of the Walla Walla District Operations Division.

"During the summer, we increased our crossing hours to accommodate an increased workload. We are now going back to a more standard crossing schedule," Ross said in a release. "We want to remind travelers about our crossing schedule hotline, so they can have the latest information and be able plan their routes across the river."

Travelers should check ahead of time because the hours and days for crossing vary by dam, Ross said. All crossings will be closed on federal holidays. Tour and school bus operators must contact managers at each dam at least 24 hours in advance for crossing authorization.

Not all vehicles will be allowed to cross. Approved vehicles include passenger cars, motorcycles, open-bed pickups, recreational vehicles, small vans and farm equipment, with the exception of fuel trucks. Prohibited vehicles include large commercial vehicles, tractor-trailers, vehicles hauling flammable or explosive cargo and vehicles that cannot be easily searched.

All vehicles are subject to search. Photo identification is required for all vehicle occupants 16 years of age and older. Foreign nationals with proper identification will also be allowed to cross.

All firearms must be unloaded and declared at the gate.
