Dworshak Dam Releases Cool Water
to Protect Salmon and Steelhead

by USACE, Walla Walla
Big Country News, July 23, 2024

Dworshak dam and reservoir (USACE, Walla Walla District) AHSAHKA -- During the hot summer months, the Walla Walla District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers releases cool water from Dworshak Dam to maintain optimal water temperatures in the Snake River for endangered salmon and steelhead.

Warm water temperatures above 68 degrees Fahrenheit can be harmful to these fish species in the Columbia and Snake river systems. To combat this, the district's scientists, biologists, and engineers have developed fish cooling systems at Lower Granite Dam and Little Goose Dam on the Snake River. These systems are aided by the cold water released from the Dworshak reservoir, ensuring a safer environment for the fish during the summer.
