Port of Portland Marine
by Associated Press |
PORTLAND, Ore. - Marine cargo declined at the Port of Portland in July, a drop blamed partly on a decision by Yang Ming Marine Transport Company to end direct shipping service.
About 850,000 tons of marine cargo passed through the port last month, far short of the more than 1.1 million tons from the previous month.
Container traffic also dropped to 16,072 units, down from the almost 20,000 containers last month and far short of the more than 25,000 in July 2007.
Port officials said the numbers reflect the loss of Yang Ming, which made its last call on Portland on July 3. But August figures are expected to increase because the Japanese-based "K" Line resumed calling on Portland last month using larger vessels than Yang Ming.
