WALLA WALLA -- Money may not grow on trees, but in Walla Walla County tree-based money is the top source of property tax-based funding.
Boise Paper, with an assessed value of $151.8 million, checked in as the county's top payer of property taxes, and its nearby neighbor Broetje Orchards, assessed at $77.3 million, was No. 2 in a Port of Walla Walla list issued Monday.
Boise's contribution to the county in terms of property taxes amounts to more than $2.2 million. Broetje accounted for about $923,000 more.
The rest of the top 10 payers of property tax include utilities, rail companies and agricultural concerns. Expanding to the top 20 in the Port's list nets Walmart, Whitman College, two wine companies, Key Technology and Walla Walla General Hospital.
The county's 20 largest taxpayers amount to just under 13 percent of the total valuation.
