No Pollution from Barge Accident on Columbia River

by Associated Press
Seattle Times, November 23, 2012

The U.S. Coast Guard says no pollution resulted from a barge accident in the Columbia River early Friday.

A barge carrying 1.8 million gallons of diesel fuel struck the walls of a lock approach to The Dalles (dalz) Dam and not a submerged object as originally believed. The Coast Guard says there are no reports of a hazard to navigation in the Columbia River.

The double-bottom barge Tri-City Voyager was being pushed by the tug Defiance.

After the accident, the tug and barge continued north, through the locks and safely moored at the upper basin north wall. Lock operators told the Coast Guard that they didn't smell diesel fuel and saw no visible pollution.
