Harmful Blue-green Algae

Vomiting, diarrhea, rash or headache
after contact with affected water
The Walla Walla County Department of Community Health has issued a warning for McNary Wildlife Refuge after finding elevated levels of cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae, in the water.
The toxic algae was found in water samples taken on Tuesday, Aug. 25, from the west side of Lake Road near the visitors center.
Blue-green algae can pose a significant health risk if ingested, inhaled or touched, a news release from the health department said.
While the warning advisory is in place, health officials recommend that people do not swim or water ski, do not drink the water, keep pets and livestock away, clean fish well and avoid areas of scum when boating.
"When in doubt, stay out," the news release said. "Avoid water that is discolored, smells bad or has foam, scum or mats. Dead animals on or near the shoreline can also indicate the presence of toxic algae."
At any lake or river, a yellow "warning" sign means there is toxic algae in the lake, while a red "danger" sign means there are very high concentrations in the water and that the body of water is closed.
If a person or pet might have been exposed to toxic algae, they should rinse off immediately. If a person or pet experiences lack of coordination, vomiting, diarrhea, rash or headache after potential contact with affected water, seek medical attention immediately.
